Job Description:

Here at the Coal Authority, we really are a great team to work with. We’re united in our passion and commitment to make a better future for people and the environment in mining areas. We carry out a wide variety of essential services from responding to coal mining hazards, to keeping people and the environment safe from mine water pollution. We are excited about what our future holds. Our work is already helping to address the nature and bio-diversity emergencies by cleaning up pollution in surface waters, whilst we are also helping to address the climate emergency by considering renewable energy generation opportunities, such as mine water heat helping Wales and the UK to meet net-zero emissions by 2050. We truly are a supportive organisation where we all live and breathe our values. We are inclusive, trusted and progressive in everything that we do.

Job Responsibilities:

  • The Programme is responsible for the assessment, development, planning and delivery of pollution mitigation and environmental improvement projects, across the portfolio of abandoned metal mine sites in Wales; it is being jointly delivered together with NRW, requiring truly collaborative working.
  • Projects generally include a variety of remedial interventions, not least surface water and spoil heap management and both passive and active mine water treatment schemes and we actively consider and trial novel and emerging technologies.
  • We encounter a wide range of environmental sensitivities and constraints at all sites, with most of the sites having some designated areas / features either close to or on-site (such as Scheduled Monuments, SSSI) and most typically located in rural areas and sitting within or close to protected areas (such as National Parks, SAC and SPA).
  • Many of these features also present opportunities for multiple outcomes, including in collaboration with other stakeholders, so increasing benefits for both the project and the Programme.  These could relate to environmental enhancements such as bio-diversity and heritage improvements, or renewable energy generation for example.

Job Requirements:

  • The successful applicant will be required to lead on the environmental assessment of projects, in close co-ordination / collaboration with colleagues both within the Coal Authority and also within NRW, ensuring appropriate ecological and environmental data is collected and utilised.
  • You will need to be proactive in identifying risks and opportunities that need to be considered during project development and delivery, promoting best environmental practice and driving projects towards more sustainable outcomes / deliverables, considering the principles of Sustainable Development, the Sustainable Management of Natural Resources and the Well-being of Future Generations Act.
  • You will need a good awareness and understanding of wider environmental and sustainability agendas and related issues in governmental and non-governmental organisations.
