Your role

You will get involved in driving the engineering strategy within SD&E, and drive developer excellence, as a highly technical and inspirational people leader and bu ild motivated inclusive teams. There are no limits here, for your creativity and vision. We are looking for you to engage with the tech community – both internally and externally, be a subject matter expert in delivery, and help to shape our opinions on new technology and spearhead POCs.

You’ll be working on some amazing projects for our clients, making a real difference every single day.

  • You could be working on a greenfield application for a government client, using the latest technology and knowing that your output is making a difference to our country.

Location: The base location is Bristol. However, the role may involve travel, working in different areas of the UK, and potentially overseas.

Your professional experience

Your technical experience must include some of:

  • Strong experience in JVM based language (Java/Scala/Kotlin/Groovy, preferably Java 8+)
  • Hands-on experience with Spring Framework-Core/Boot/MVC, Hibernate/JPA.
  • Experience in SOA based architecture, Web Services (Apache/CXF/JAXWS/ JAXRS/SOAP/REST)
  • Good understanding of JVM memory model, optimization and fine-tuning of JVM.
  • Experience with Multithreading, Concurrent Packages and Concurrent APIs.
  • Strong experience in Scala functional programming
  • Hands-on experience with Play Framework and Cats Library
  • Experience with some of the following technologies – Http4s, Doobie, Fs2, Kafka, Kubernetes, Cassandra, Spark
  • Experience in SOA based architecture, Web Services
  • Good experience on API design and building distributed applications using Micro services architecture.
  • Good understanding of both relational and NoSQL data stores, such as PostgreSQL, Redis, and DynamoDB.
  • Experience with messaging services (ActiveMQ, Apache Kafka, RabbitMQ, JMS or SQS).
  • Good understanding of API Gateway, service registry & discovery, load balancer, circuit breaker etc. Knowledge of DDD and microservices security is value addition.
  • Good understanding of Unix command line and systems administration
  • Strong exposure to build tools such as Maven or Gradle, CI/CD process, Jenkins, Dev-ops, containerization using Docker, container orchestration tooling such as Kubernetes.
  • Experience in other backend-oriented language as Node.js, Python, .NET etc.
  • Be a Clean Code practitioner and follower of TDD/BDD. Experience of writing test cases using Mockito / Power-mock frameworks.
  • Good understanding of data structure & algorithms, design patterns, scalability, design principles, logical architecture etc.
  • Experience in modern software development methodologies such as Scrum or Kanban.


  • Experience of public and private cloud development using platforms such as AWS, Azure, GCP, Rackspace etc.
  • Good understanding of automated testing tools like Selenium and performance testing tools like JMeter.
  • Demonstrates ability to write complex SQL queries and stored procedures and performance tuning of SQL queries.
  • Hands-on experience at any workflow Engine (Camunda, jBPM, or Activiti etc.)
  • Basic understanding of Front-end frameworks like React/Angular.
  • Experience with shell scripting.
