We are looking for a Senior Legal Counsel- Private Bank & Wealth to join the HSBC UK Legal Team. The purpose of the role is to provide legal advice, guidance and support to the HSBC Private Banking and Wealth businesses in the UK to ensure that the Group’s exposure to legal risk is managed

HSBC UK Legal plays an important role in protecting the Group’s reputation by helping to future-proof the organisation through the provision of robust and comprehensive legal advice to senior management, business lines and functions. Whether it is giving advice about products which help vulnerable people, innovative new payment products, simplifying our Ts & Cs and making them accessible, or supporting regulatory change, our advice and experience is very much appreciated and we are treated as an integral part of teams which wants to get things done.

You will:

  • Provide counsel and legal support on a variety of legal matters, or in a specialist area, including matters that may be complex or may have some impact;
  • To be considered to be a trusted adviser to the business by ensuring that commercially sensitive, pragmatic and practical legal support and advice is provided in a cost-effective manner;
  • Provide support and guidance to the PB & Wealth businesses with regard to legal risks arising in jobholder’s area of expertise/responsibility;
  • Provide prompt, commercial, practical and sometimes complex (under supervision) and / or specialized legal advice to PB & Wealth business;
  • Be proactive in the provision of legal support and in advising the business promptly of material legal developments and their implications;
  • Ensure senior legal management is fully briefed on major issues arising in relevant business area and major legislative changes in area of expertise.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will be / have:

  • A qualified lawyer with PQE and demonstrable financial services experience gained within a financial institution and/or private practice;
  • English law knowledge and experience, ideally in the context of investment business/wealth management but banking and/or credit would also be considered, preferably with retail/consumer experience and a working knowledge of the laws in the major jurisdictions in which HSBC operates is highly desirable;
  • UK regulatory experience in one of these fields is also an advantage;
  • Knowledge of the HSBC Group corporate structures, its business and personnel and a clear understanding of HSBC’s corporate culture;
  • Experience of providing prompt and practical legal guidance, dealing with ambiguity, considering various perspectives and taking responsibility for the outcomes such as potential long term risks and implications.

The base location for the role is 1 Centenary Square, Birmingham or Cork Street London. Hybrid working applies.
